Artist Bio:

Kasia Bruniany has been a global traveler since childhood, and her memories of places, situations and people serve as the inspirations for her art. She explains, “I want to paint in a way that makes people stop and think about what they see.” To accomplish this, she says she uses vibrant colors and textures on canvas to reveal nuanced movement and conditions that make points in time worthy of our attention. Her goal is to reward the viewer with emotional relief from the dictates of marching time that otherwise control our daily lives.

The artist was born and raised in Poland. Her parents were science and medical professionals with a passion for visual arts and music. Recognizing her early artistic talent, they encouraged her to explore art, architecture and photography.

She was a university student when the Solidarity movement sparked a period of social and emotional upheaval that would grip Poland for nearly a decade. For her, it was a time of soaring creativity inspired by the vivid city life and great uncertainty resulting from the constraints of martial law and political repression.

During the day, she could be found in the city streets and markets sketching the routine activities of ordinary citizens or at theatre rehearsals capturing the exaggerated gestures and motions of the performers. At night, under dim dormitory lights beyond the watchful eye of the state, she developed anti-Soviet posters in support of Solidarity. It was under these conditions that she began to develop her own artistic style.

The artist received an MFA in Art and Design with a minor in Interior Design from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Poland, in 1988. While on vacation in 1997, in Acapulco, she met fellow countryman Cas Bruniany, and they married. In 2013 Bruniany left a distinguished career, as a designer and art director, to concentrate exclusively on her painting.

The physical process of applying paint to canvas is itself an emotional journey for Kasia. “I enjoy the oily texture of the paint and its aroma,” she says. “I like to work with different mediums that alter the thickness of the paint. I can make it drippy or quite stiff and thick.” She applies the paint generously on canvas and manipulates it with large brushes and palette knives. Kasia’s new work was inspired by the colors and motion of the open Florida skies and shorelines. She paints in her studio from reference photos and studies made on location. Her work has appeared in 18 solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe, and received numerous recognitions.

Artist Statement:

I believe art is about our connection to each other as human beings and to nature. I strive to create an intimate conversation between the work and the viewer so that the viewer becomes sensitized to seeing more, appreciating more, connecting more, and loving more in everyday life.
