Nancy's Bio:

Nancy was born and reared in Dayton, Ohio. She studied theater then Sociology at Ohio University and Education at Ohio State University. She graduated from the University of Rochester with a B.S. degree in education. Her artistic perspective reflects her mid-western roots and a liberal education.
Nancy married, moved to California and, with her husband, reared two wonderful sons. It was in California that she started an artistic career, initially focusing on stained glass and abstract art. In the early 90’s, she took her first printmaking classes with Prof. Lloyd Menard, at the University of South Dakota. After taking a year off to deal with breast cancer, Nancy and her husband moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she continued taking printmaking and other art classes. Recognizing the need for a more rigorous art education, Nancy applied to and was accepted at the Ringling School of Art & Design in Sarasota, Florida. At Ringling, she received a BFA with honors with a dual major in printmaking and painting. After graduating from Ringling, Nancy spent a semester at the Western Kentucky University working with Judy Chicago and Donald Woodman on the collaborative project, “At Home: A Kentucky Project.”
Throughout her life, Nancy has been active in her community, in politics and in the women’s movement. She has been especially concerned about the rights of women and with expanding opportunities for women. She has been affiliated with Planned Parenthood for many years as well as the National Organization of Women. Nancy lives and works in Sarasota, Florida.

Artist Statement:

Nancy is an artist printmaker who derives inspiration for her work from friends and family, from the news media, and from other artists including Sue Coe, Judy Chicago, Franz Cline and Robert Motherwell. She uses art as a language to convey information about issues that are important to her.
Much of her imagery is about the stresses that women experience as a result of culturally accepted discrimination and violence against women. Often, she uses metaphors such as the vessel or corset or cages to illustrate her message. The “Hourglass Lady” represents women stuck in both time and place by the accident of birth. Her goal is to present art to the viewing public that raises awareness and bears witness to the difficult lives of women in many places around the world.
Nancy creates both intaglio and collagraph prints. Her prints display a love of line, simplicity, and efficiency… to say a lot with a little. By manipulating the materials, layering the ink, building history of line and texture through the printing matrix, she attempts to realize the elusive essence of the thought. Nancy enjoys the process, which is of equal or greater importance to her than the finished piece. She exhibits at the Dabbert Gallery in Sarasota, Florida.
