Artist Bio:

Patricia Anderson Turner addresses social and political issues with mixed media and textile art; her subjects are as varied as war, mental illness, social media, climate change, and gun control among many others.

Turner’s career highlights include a First Place at the Verona Museum of Modern Art in Italy, 2011, as well as top honors in museums and art galleries throughout the United States, Central America, and Italy.  Several pieces are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Michigan State University, the internationally travelling Human Rights Art Exhibit  and at Florida Southwestern State College as well as in private collections throughout the US, Central America, and Italy.

Many of Turner’s pieces have been featured in hardcover reference books such as Quilts and Health , 2018, Indiana University Press Office of Scholarly Publishing and Quilts and Human Rights, 2016, by the University of Nebraska Press with a forward by Desmond Tutu.  Her work has been featured on PBS television specials. Turner’s installation, “FLIGHT” was in the Museum of Modern Art in Tallahassee in the summer of 2018 and is included in the 2019 Florida K-12 art curriculum.

Turner’s studio is in Punta Gorda, FL, where she has resided for 30 years.

Artist Statement:

My art addresses issues of social, cultural, and political concern. Utilizing familiar and iconic imagery, often of conflict and pain, and placing these images within backgrounds that are often exuberant and colorful creates tension between the gravity of the subject matter and the cheery playfulness of the presentation. My goal is to disrupt complacency, encourage dialogue, and even provoke the viewer to examine issues that affect us all. The act of creating helps release my frustration over these thorny and complex ailments of our age.

I aim to disrupt, to provoke, perhaps even to aggravate; always using my work as the catalyst for reflective thought. For me, this is the ultimate function of art.

My recent series, “Of Victims and Violence”, laments the lack of sensible gun control in the USA as well as the horrors of war, both historical and contemporary.  The pieces are made in silk, rusted with automotive brake discs, painted utilizing Inktense pencils and rayon thread, and mounted on reclaimed toy guns.  The hyistorical pieces utilize 3D embellishments such as bombs, nooses, and KKK hoods.
