Bio

Eileen Shaloum is a painter and mixed media artist who resides in Delray Beach, Florida and Long Beach, New York. She received her B.A. in Art Education and her M.A. in Art History from Hofstra University in New York. Being an art educator in the public schools of Long Island from 1971-2006 was a rewarding career, which inspired her own art.

During her career teaching art, she gave professional development workshops to other art teachers at New York Art Teachers Association and Long Island Art Teachers Association conferences. She also gave workshops to other artists on the use of mixed media. During that period of time, she continued to exhibit her own work and ran several art businesses from her home studio; these businesses included designing children's clothing, creating one of a kind art furniture and painting portrait sign-in books for parties, engagements, weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, etc.

After retiring in 2006, she and her husband, Al, bought a home in Delray Beach, splitting her time between Florida and New York. Both places are stimulating artistically and offer many opportunities to show, exhibit, sell, and participate in arts organizations. Making and developing art is her primary focus, and has become her full time occupation.

She has exhibited in galleries and museums, warehouses and libraries both in group and one person shows in New York and Florida during the past four decades. She has won many awards and is in several private collections around the country.

Artist Statement

I am an abstract painter and mixed media artist who enjoys the process of layering paint and found objects. I bury images under paint, pastel, charcoal, found objects, cloth, photographs, collaged papers and fabrics. I frequently use written passages, which may include poetry, quotes or old letters, in support of my message. Using bold color and a variety of texture,  my goal is to draw the viewer closer so they might interact with the themes in my spirited compositions.

My latest body of work called “Invisible Cities” is inspired by the book “Invisible Cities” by Italo Calvino. His book is a jumping off point for my abstract landscapes. The imaginary places described by him, parts of Kubla Khan’s empire, have become my fanciful internal landscapes.

The journeys in this book have become a metaphor for my own journeys in life- actual journeys, inward journeys, emotional journeys, realized journeys, and unrealized journeys. In my pieces, I am hoping the viewer might identify with my thoughts and reflections.

After initially making my abstract cities on stretched canvas, I decided to try unstretched canvas, glued or sewn together, to form the backdrop for each new whimsical landscape; adding even more texture, I wanted them to become as sculptural as a two dimensional piece can be. I sometimes use interactive elements to encourage the viewer to be a participant  as well as an observer.

I have exhibited in galleries and museums in New York and Florida in both group and one woman shows over the last three decades. I have won many awards, and my paintings are in many private collections
