Artist's Statement:

My training as an abstract expressionist is evidenced in my paint application and my sense of scale
and color. Feeling the need to master drawing, I began to introduce realistic images into my work.
I currently take these realistic images and abstract the qualities of shape, color, scale and light. I use
various subjects that interest me and create large watercolors using, at times, colored pencil to
produce the desired effect. I perceive my work as abstract, using images as a secondary consideration.

Portrait:

When I paint a portrait, I try to not only capture the physical qualities of a person’s face, but also
the character and personality that I see in them. I do this by exaggerating the features, poses and
colors that I see in each person. In this way I hope to capture not only a likeness but also everyone’s
uniqueness....that special thing that makes each person who they are.
