Nancy Dillon show at 5th Ave Gallery ” Where Am I”

Where Am I?, a group exhibition of work by The Wednesday Group will be the featured exhibit during the month of July at Fifth Avenue Art Gallery. This exhibit of work by 17 women artists will run from July 1 through 27 with a First Friday Opening Reception on July 5, from 5:30 through 8:30 pm.

Begun informally by Donne Bitner and Loretta Schnitzius in the early 80s, The Wednesday Group grew over time to become an informal organization of roughly 20 women artists. In the beginning they called themselves The Beach Girls. The purpose was to only discuss art. They met for a while in restaurants but then moved to Donne’s studio. From there the group grew and became a rich resource of women artists. The group has always remained fluid, members coming and going as life demanded, while still retaining its history of group shows, supporting each other’s work and discussing art. There have never been any officers or a move to make the group a formal organization. 

The women have several times taken trips together, all centered around art or the making of art. They have had several group shows, including Chaos at the Foosaner Museum in 2003. Many members have shown in solo or group exhibitions at the Foosaner also. Some of the members did juried street shows on the FL circuit, juried museum shows, taught at-risk teens in the community, taught art in elementary schools with Brevard Cultural Alliance, taught at BCC, local libraries and gave private art lessons. Education levels include BA, BS, BFA, MFA and PhD as well as self taught artists. All together the group represents uncounted years of art experience. Despite the looseness of the group’s organization, joining remains an informal juried admission. 

The ladies of The Wednesday Group have now united to bring their talents to the challenging question, Where Am I? Some are responding literally, some are responding philosophically. No matter the response you prefer, you are sure to find this exhibit a treasure of beauty and challenge.

Fifth Avenue Art Gallery is in the Eau Gallie Arts District in Melbourne, FL. All events are free and open to the public. The gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 am until 5 pm, with First Friday Openings until 8:30 pm. For further information please call the gallery.

Eileen Shaloum’s Solo Show March – April 2018

Eileen Shaloum will have a solo show of her newest work, entitled “Invisible Cities”, at the Benzaiten Center for the Creative Arts, 1105 2nd. Ave. S, Lake Worth, Fl. These paintings, most of them wall hangings on canvas, are whimsical and imaginary abstract landscapes and figures. The show runs from March 23-April 14, 2018. The opening reception is Friday March 23, 6-10 PM. It coincides with their fundraiser “The Wearable Art Show” an event with live music, cocktail reception, wearable art vendors and glass making demos. The event raises money for children’s programs and scholarship funding. The cost for that event is $50 pp. The next day, Saturday, March 24, from 2-5 PM will be another reception for friends, family and fellow artists.

66th Symposium Press For show at Bonita Springs Center for the Arts

Thanks to the eagle eyes of one of our team members, Christine Reichow: she found an article in the current edition of Florida Weekly. This article appears in the Bonita Springs (and probably Naples) issues, although it didn’t appear in the Ft. Myers edition. It appears in the Arts & Entertainment section of the newspaper.

The work of two Area VII artists — Cheryl Fausel and Richard Rosen — is featured along with the art of Area III’s Eleanor Merritt. We did send the news media abundant images so that they could have a wide selection. It’s always interesting to see what they’ll select.   The article doesn’t identify the artists whose work is depicted. But for the most part, the paper stuck to the press release that we sent along. Many thanks to Muffy Clark Gill specifically for transmitting the release to Florida Weekly and to both Richard and Muffy for their work in publicizing the event for us. And bravo to the artists whose work was selected by the editors to be featured!

You’ll see that our Tour Director, Sandy Gregory, is not only a passionate traveler,
but a seasoned guide who loves to share her knowledge and travel secrets with her guests.
She has done over 40 tours throughout Italy, studied in Florence in college, is of Italian
heritage and speaks Italian. This is a tour for women — by women. As we spend our time
capturing the beauty of Tuscany with our pens and brushes, Sandy will be making sure
our glasses are full, there is plenty of truffle cheese and chocolate to munch on, and every
detail is attended to so your travel adventure is enjoyable, memorable and fun.

During the tour, I will explain and demonstrate at each location how to see and feel
the surroundings. Learning how to capture those emotions in your journal makes
for a strong visual experience. You will learn new techniques to build your artistic
skills and come home with a new confidence in what you are rendering and painting.
Collecting memorabilia along the way and collaging them into your journal will also
add to the overall experience and reinforce your travel memories.

The comprehensive price includes:

• 2 nights in a boutique hotel in the heart of Florence (double-twin occupancy),
6 nights in a villa in the Tuscan Hills. Due to our close relationships with our
family-owned villas, we can accommodate groups as small as 6 and up to 14.
Accommodations will be in a European double-twin room or small efficiency
apartment with a shared bathroom between 2 people. We want your experience

2014 Symposium in Saint Augustine In May

FLORIDA ARTIST GROUP TO HOLD ANNUAL SHOW IN ST. AUGUSTINE

The Florida Artist Group (FLAG) is the longest continuous artist’s organization in the state’s history.  Incorporated in 1949 as a non-profit organization for accomplished practicing artists, the group focuses on one show a year, moving to a different Florida city each year.  Being an “historic” art group, it seems particularly appropriate to have the exhibition in such an historic city.

The members are juried into the group by consideration of a portfolio of current work combined with a resume demonstrating National or State recognition. The goal is to choose artists whose work will contribute significantly to the excellence of the exhibit, and to encourage these artists to continue honing their creative talents. The shows are judged for awards, always by an out of State juror of some National eminence.

The following regional artists are members of the FLAG Artist Group:

Sydney Mckenna (Area VI Chairman), Maribel Angel, S. Barre Barrett, Gretchen Ebersol, Heidi Edwards, Ronald Gibbons, Mary Lou Gibson, Susanna Richter-Helman, Jan Miller, Beau Redmond, Gene Roberds, Ginger (Virginia) Sheridan, James Stanford, Jean Troemel, and Ron Vellucci.

This year’s judge is Stephen Knudsen. Stephen Knudsen is a Professor of Painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design and exhibits work in art institutions in the United States and Europe. Knudsen is the senior editor and critic for ARTPULSE Magazine and is also a contributor to the Huffington Post, New York Arts Magazine, HyperAllergic, The SECAC Review Journal, Professional Artist magazine and many others. He is a co-developer of Image Comparison Aesthetics for the artstory.org and developer of Fourth Dimension Color Theory and the Dual Color Wheel used widely in universities.

The Florida Artist Group 64th Annual Exhibition opens at the St. Augustine Art Association (22 Marine Street) Friday, May 2nd at 5:00 p.m. (concurrent with the ” First Friday” Art walk) and will include an acoustic guitar/voice performance by Colton McKenna (www.coltonmckenna.com). The exhibit will contain a diverse collection of work by the talented, creative, and extremely active artists, painters, photographers, sculptors and mixed-media artists that make up this group.  Don’t miss this opportunity to see some of the best art in the state.
