Cheryl’s Bio:

Born in Ohio, Cheryl recalls early childhood desires to be an artist.  Her family did not look favorably on such dreams and pointed her to more traditional roles for Mid-Western girls in the 1950’s.  Her family relocated to Miami when Cheryl was a pre-teen.

After she married, Cheryl attended a technical art school.  She graduated with honors from the Art Institute of Atlanta.  Her course of study was Visual Communications/Graphic Design, and her first job was staff artist at an advertising agency in Atlanta, GA.   She found advertising not to her liking.  After two years, she left and became a full-time homemaker.  Cheryl continued to draw as a hobby and show her works at local shows.  The untimely death of her husband put Cheryl on a different course.  She took a bookkeeping job and left art behind.

After retiring, she began to paint in earnest.  Cheryl draws on her imagination and design skills as a starting point for her works.  Although she sometimes paints in acrylics, she prefers to paint in alkyds, a fast-drying oil paint.  Her paintings have been exhibited at the local, state, national and international level.  In 2020, Cheryl received the Painting Award at the 6th Annual International Art Rèsilience Exhibition (online) Musèe de Peinture de Saint-Frajou, France.  Cheryl has also received national awards as well as several local awards for her paintings.  Her work has been published in Fredericksburg Literary and Art Review in both 2017 and 2018.  ThoughtArt Magazine featured three of her paintings in their July 2020 issue.

Cheryl is a juried member of the Florida Artists Group; Member of the National Art League; Fort Lauderdale Branch of the National League of American Pen Women (Arts); Allied Artists of America, Associate; and a member of Broward Art Guild.

Cheryl currently lives in South Florida.

Artist Statement:

Angles and lines, repeating patterns, and some circles – for relief.

Angles and lines represent boundaries.  I like boundaries, they make me feel safe, as do repeating patterns.  They’re comforting because they’re familiar and expected.

I’m an introvert and I find it stressful to cope with turmoil.  When I compose a piece, I’m working out my thoughts and ideas.  Some, but not all of them, focus on my unease.  I invite the viewer to examine their own thoughts when regarding the images in my painting.  Other works are lighthearted, a playful look at life from an introvert’s perspective.

I begin by drawing little sketched patterns on paper, dividing space.  It frees me of distractions so I can focus my thoughts.  I start to see things happen within the drawing and an idea for a painting begins to emerge.  I transfer the drawing to the canvas.  Alkyd is my medium of choice, but I also paint in acrylics.  As I paint, I feel myself move into the painting.  I work until I find what I’m looking for — balance, harmony in smooth color fields, edgy transitions between the angles and lines, repeating patterns, and then some circles – for relief.
