Linda’s Bio:

Linda Chipperfield focused on graphic design and illustration during her early career as an art director and creative director. She spent 20 years in the ad agency business in Missouri, then followed her passion for the environment to a non-profit in Washington DC. She has travelled extensively and honed her drawing and painting skills by attending workshops and doing commissions for private collectors in Missouri, Washington DC, Virginia and Florida. As a sustainability advocate, Linda has worked for two international environmental organizations and served on boards and committees for the United Nations Environmental Program, the US Green Building Council, and the Sierra Club. Since relocating to Florida in 2014, she has served on the Environmental Stewardship Committee for the City of Atlantic Beach and helped the city earn Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Linda’s third career is that of a full-time artist.

Artist Statement:

I’ve painted all my life, but my father was an ad executive and the illustrators’ annuals and magazines he brought home influenced my style. I was trained in watercolor and transparent acrylics in college and those mediums suit my desire for accurate depiction combined with the fluid, natural effects of water. But my impatience, and an obsession with line stemming from my design background, often drives me to use the brush like a pencil and incorporate thread, ribbon and other textures into my work.

In my travels to ancient cities such as Beijing, Hanoi, and Kyoto, I’ve been struck by the contrast between the traditions of the past and our current culture. With a background in illustration and communications, I have always tried to tell a story with my work. By varying the color and tone of the different elements in the painting I’ve attempted to highlight these culture clashes.

My inspiration for subject matter often comes from a fusion of two passions—creativity and protecting the natural world. Through years of environmental activism my message has almost always centered on the awe-inspiring wonders of nature. My art is part of my advocacy for protecting our environment and inspiring respect for nature. If I can motivate one person to appreciate the earth’s beauty, I’ll consider it a successful piece.
