Minakshi’s Bio:
Minakshi De born in 1958. Minakshi’s journey from India to United States is a trajectory at once bound by artistic search for identity and tradition. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art’s with honors from University of Chittagong and a post Graduate diploma from ‘Fashion & Art Institute, Dallas,Texas,USA.1982. She has had 26 solo Art show 75 group show throughout India, Bangladesh, China, Italy, Spain and USA. She got an awards in varies exhibition at India and USA. Art is her love and inclination and is this passion that keeps her going. Her stylistic technique used in the painting is inspired by the tenets of expressionism coupled with gestural brush work. She has used the interplay of colors and texture to represent these objects in a form that is a deviation from their retinal reality.
Artist Statement:
I am a narrator, telling stories, through my paintings for more than 45 years. Born in 1958, I have experienced innumerable changes in my life. With those changes, came hurdles and impediments. But nothing could take away my passion for art from me I continued expressing myself through my paintbrush, my colors my emotions and the myriad of colors carried by paint brush manifests through the beautiful mixing of paints that I implemented in my paintings. Fame has been my constant companion with 26 solo exhibitions to date numerous group exhibitions in the USA and other countries, innumerable accolades and awards. Migration has given me the valuable privilege of experiencing variety, enriching my insight. I consider myself a storyteller. My series of paintings reveal poignant stories all their own. MIGRATION talks of my own journey to different countries. In CAPTIVE, I show the veiled women, the invisible or the visible screens that deter them from expression. My background might be Indian, my storylines might be taken from the pages of my own life, but I speak for the women of the entire world. If you look closely, you will see the layers in my paintings. The intricacies of the patterns that characterize my style can be easily made out over the layers. The arabesque patterns, the latticed screens, the geometric patterned “Jaalies” of the Rajasthan palaces, have mesmerized me always. The women of the royal household, standing concealed from the world in the “Jharokhas”, veiled from the public eyes. What did they have to say? What were they thinking? These and myriads of emotions runs through my mind while I paint. The complexity of a women’s mind, is portrayed through the layers of colors in my paintings, one above the other, the perfect mix, yet each one standing out on their own.
I love experimenting, and trying out new methods which gives me a new zeal towards continuing my passion. A new concept came to my mind while setting up the display for my Migration and Captive series solo painting exhibition at the gallery.
I decided to create on canvas painting for putting up as huge backdrop behind my Artwork display. The backdrop was itself a painting done in line drawing got inspiration from Indian block print pattern. This naturally created a desire within me to do line drawing and painting.
I always loved line drawing as I could freely control it and work on it. This influenced me to start doing painting with line on big canvas for a new series of painting. Any subject that touches my heart finds a place on the canvas and is expressed though my feelings on it. My expertise also encompasses Graphics, Drawings, Oils, Acrylics, Mixed media, Three dimension work, and other Installations.
