Artist Statement:

“Even Darkness has light – the merging of the two.” I began doing night paintings in 2022. I have been doing landscapes so why not paint the landscape at night? The first two or three have a limited palette and they are of my neighborhood. I painted the community park and guardhouse. I like the contrast of the light and dark and the fact that details become abstracted. Night landscapes brought up my childhood fear of separation and aloneness. These works inadvertently gave me tools to deal with this
feeling. In childhood the Cuban crisis and the constant media advice to be on alert (be prepared with a fallout shelter). The idea of separation from my family caused recurring nightmares. In 1973 I had to deal with that fear when I was in Israel during The Yom Kippur War. Included in this series are daylight landscapes of present-day Israel. Today Israel is my comfort place, the place of my people, very artistic, bustling, and family oriented. My art merges my past so darkness has become a creative endeavor and in it I find the light.

My medium is paint and mixed media. Many of my pieces are painted on wood. I love how the paint applies to this surface. A series of paintings include Hebrew font. I am drawn to the movement and shape of this alphabet – its mystical and historical roots. I love incorporating sewing, painting, collage, drawing and recycling and have created a group of large fabric mixed media pieces. My childhood prepared me for my craft – My earliest memories are drawing and sewing. I attended Edinboro University and Kean University -graduating with a degree in Art Ed and Special Education with teaching certification in New Jersey and Florida. In New
Jersey I did a six -month Art Therapy Internship at Essex County Hospital Center.

My permanent home has been South Florida since 1975. I am a retired Miami-Dade art teacher teaching K-12 art and autistic classes. Prior this I was employed at South Florida State Psychiatric Hospital as a Rehab/Art Therapist. My patients and students won awards and had their art published (the Schizophrenia Bulletin /Natl. Inst. Of Mental Health – 1993 -cover photo & college textbook). I was
interviewed on Channel 17 with patients about the First Hospital Art Show. My students earned first time AP Drawing credit. I created and copyrighted zippered paintings. Currently I am an active member of The National League of American ———– , and Gold Coast Watercolor Society. I was represented by The Greene Gallery in Coconut Grove Florida and was an active member of —–Caucus for Art. I continue to exhibit and win awards in juried shows. My devotion to making art is lifelong.
