Artist Bio:

Eileen Shaloum is a painter and mixed media artist who resides in Delray Beach, Florida and Long Beach, New York. She received her B.A. in Art Education and her M.A. in Art History from Hofstra University in New York. Being an art educator in the public schools of Long Island from 1971-2006 was a rewarding career, which continues to inspire her own art.

During her career teaching art, she gave professional development workshops to other art teachers in the New York Art Teachers Association (NYSATA) and Long Island Art Teachers Association (LIATA). During that period of time, she continued to exhibit her own work and ran several art businesses from her home studio; these businesses included designing one of a kind children’s clothing, creating one of a kind art furniture and painting portrait sign-in books for all occasions.

After retiring in 2006, she and her husband, Al, bought a home in Delray Beach, splitting her time between Florida and New York. Joining and becoming active in many art organizations gave her opportunities to exhibit her work and become part of a network of talented artists. This has contributed to a busy full time art career. She has exhibited in galleries and museums, warehouses and libraries both in group and solo shows during the past four decades. She has won many awards and is in several private collections in the United States and England.

Artist Statement:

I am an abstract painter and mixed media artist who enjoys the process of layering paint, papers, fabric, photographs, written passages into the picture plane in a bold and colorful manner.

An ongoing theme in my body of work was inspired by the book “Invisible Cities” by Italo Calvino. His book became a jumping off point for my imaginary abstract landscapes. The journeys travelled in this book have become a metaphor for my own journeys- real, reflective, imagined, fulfilled and unfulfilled.

When doing figurative work, they are always playful with a touch of humor and whimsy. Even when I am working with a serious subject, for example, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, I emphasized her being more of a cultural icon over her serious work as a Supreme Court Justice. My non objective paintings are a combination of paint and papers, fabric and other mixed media, and mark making tools. My style is often a combination of hard and soft edges, lots of color and carefully placed lines.
