Jan’s Bio:

My career in the visual arts has spanned about 40 years now. Born and raised in Chicago my education and career started there. I have been fortunate to not only sell much of my art but I have also won many awards during this time.
My works are in the Illinois State Museum, the
Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, the Jesse Besser Museum in Michigan and in many corporate and private collections throughout the United States. I had my own gallery, the Jan Miller Gallery prior to founding the Butterfield Garage Art Gallery here in St. Augustine. Butterfield Garage will
celebrate its 16th year next February. Next door to the original gallery, Butterfield Too Gallery was opened four years ago….however, it has recently been closed. I was part of a group of artists who were responsible for starting the current successful ART WALKS on First Friday of every month.
I have been a member of the Art Galleries Of St. Augustine (AGOSA) for 17 years….the first 4 of which I was the Publicity Director. Since 1999 I have been the State Membership Chairman for The Florida Artist Group, which is a prominent Statewide Organization of Professional Artists and I have participated in 12 FLAG exhibitions throughout the state.
I currently exhibit my work at Butterfield Garage Art Gallery, St. Augustine, Florida and Arts on Douglas in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. I have worked to promote and nurture the amazingly talented and diverse Art Scene in St. Augustine by offering exhibition space to many of our most prominent artists, to network with other galleries in order to keep it vibrant, and to bring new and upcoming artists to the public.

Artist’s Statement:

I have been a realist for many years. Still life has been my favorite subject and for years I painted my favorite objects….arranging and rearranging the shapes and colors following traditional painting techniques. The paintings were usually larger than life…and the subjects were most often
unusual or unexpected. I want the viewer to appreciate the world around him…to notice the everyday beauty that exists in what we call ordinary things. However, for the past 15 years or so, I have deviated from that tradition and like to have fun painting ‘characters’ in 3D. In a way I have returned to the playful era of my childhood. I have a sense of humor that was not prominent in my ‘serious’ painting and now I am doing whatever I feel like….but always enjoying painting!
